THE MONTHLY HOME VISIT IN THE USA
The Holy Family Monthly Home Visit -MHV- offers a difficult but rewarding challenge to all contemporary Christian families. On the one hand, such a devotion encourages and nourishes the practice of the virtues assumed by Jesus, Mary , and Joseph as a family while, on the other, this daily experience leads to a fruitful and deepening appreciation of the presence of God in our lives with regard to Christian marriage and the family. Indeed: it is in Nazareth where each disciple family comes to discover its own identity and the meaning of its mission in the world as a vocation to love and the service of life.
The MHV is an effective means for transforming each Christian family into a holy family and each home into a new Nazareth. It seeks to accomplish it by having each family receive into its own dwelling the traveling Holy Family Little Chapel. For the Pilgrim Chapel journeys from one home to another through the arrangement of different groups of families. Each family within each group keeps the Little Chapel for a given period of time agreed upon by the families in each group.
Through the proper celebration of the Reception, Home Liturgy, and Farewell ceremonies, all family members are enabled to grow in their understanding of the Word and its practical application to their daily lives, experiencing within themselves through their daily fellowship of life, prayer and work, the profound truths and wholesome values which are contained in the mystery and the gospel of Nazareth.
The actual origin of the MHV is in fact somewhat obscure, for there is a little, if any, historical evidence as to exactly when, where, and how it made its first appearance. At the turn of the last century, it was lost amongst other devotions, but was fortunately rediscovered and enthusiastically embraced by the religious Congregation of the sons of the Holy Family, founded by Blessed Joseph Manyanet in 1864.
These religious priests and brothers found it to be most appropriate and amenable for sharing their charism, that is, their family life apostolate in the Church and in the world by encouraging families to look toward Nazareth for inspiration and guidance, and to model their own individual and family lifestyles after the examples of God's own human Family, Jesus, Mary, and Joseph.
